Applications are invited for a PhD scholarship in Plate Tectonics/Geodynamics working with Professor Dietmar Müller’s EarthByte Group at the School of Geosciences, The University of Sydney, as part of the project “The Virtual Geological Observatory: a four dimensional view into the Earth through deep-time data-mining”. The position will focus on building plate kinematic models, including plate deformation, and on linking plate kinematic models to mantle convection, mantle seismic tomography and geological observations, such as palaeogeography, basin stratigraphy, and data constraining rock uplift.

Successful candidates of THE UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY GRANTS FOR SCHOLARSHIPS
must have:

* An undergraduate degree
and an MSc degree (or first-class Honours degree) in geology or geophysics
* An interest to carry out research at the interface between geophysics and geology
* Experience with scripting/programming, especially in an OSX/Unix/Linux environment (e.g. shell scripting, Python or C++)
* Expertise in long-term geodynamics/plate tectonics and some aspect of computational/numerical modeling
* Knowledge of common computer software for data analysis and map making, eg. Matlab, Generic Mapping Tools (GMT)
* An ability to work as part of a research team
* Good communication skills, and an ability to present results both orally and in written form.

International Ph.D. Programs in the Life Sciences

The Life Science Zurich Graduate School houses several highly
competitive Ph.D. programs, run jointly by the ETH Zurich and the
University of Zurich. Each program offers research and education
opportunities in a stimulating international environment for ambitious
students who wish to work towards a Ph.D. degree. Accepted students
perform their research project in one of the participating research
groups of their favorite program, according to their scientific
interest. Advanced teaching and training courses are offered throughout
the curriculum. The program language is English throughout. Ph.D.
studies usually last 3-4 years.

Applicants must hold or anticipate receiving a Masters degree or
equivalent from a university in a relevant field before starting the
Ph.D. program. Applicants accepted for the program will have to
register with either the University of Zurich or ETH Zurich, depending
on the affiliation of their future research group.

Special Scholarships to Undergraduate Students for the year 2010/11 in UK

The University invites applications for the Special Scholarships from candidates who reside in Devon and the South West region of Great Britain and who are offered an undergraduate place at the University (Exeter and Cornwall campuses) through UCAS during the 2009/10 application cycle for degrees commencing in October 2010 or October 2011.

Who may Apply:
Offered to new students who meet the specific requirements of each scholarship scheme as follows:
• Ballard Scholarships – for males who have been members of the Ballard Institute, Plymouth. If funds available, also available to males from the City of Plymouth or the Borough of Saltash or the Rural District of Plympton St Mary. £50 – £85 annually.
• Cedric Hall Mardon Scholarship – for sons of officers of the RAF or RAFVR, primarily sons of officers who have died whilst on active service. Up to £70 annually.
• Charles Read Scholarships – offered to individuals under the age of 19 at the time of application whose parents have resided for the preceding 15 years in the Parish of Honiton or, if funds available, the Honiton Parliamentary division of Devon. Up to £100 annually.
• George Christopher Davie Masonic Scholarship – offered to children of a Devonshire Freemason who;
1. was resident in Devon when initially admitted to the lodge.
2. a subscribing member of the Lodge and resident in Devon for 5 consecutive years (within 2 years of an application being made). Up to £100 annually.

Scholarship Details:
1. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of both meeting the specified criteria as detailed above and consideration of UCAS application forms, achievement of grades in GCE A-Level examinations (or examinations of equivalent standing) as determined by the scholarship committee.
2. Awards are made for one year initially. Scholarships can be renewed annually for the normal duration of a first degree programme, subject to satisfactory progress by the nominated student and recurrent funds being available.

Netherland Scholarship for Indonesians Only

StuNed, Studeren in Nederland MBA scholarships, is a scholarship programme focusing on mid-career professionals, as part of the bilateral cooperation between Indonesia and the Netherlands. The scholarship programme aims to contribute to the development of Indonesia through strengthening the human resources of Indonesian organisations. Individual applicants may apply for master degree or short courses in the Netherlands, whilst institutions may apply through the StuNed Group Application and/or for refresher courses.

The StuNed programme is supporting the Dutch policy for development co-operation with Indonesia and aims to contribute to the achievement of the UN Millennium Development Goals in 2015. The framework for the bilateral relations between the Netherlands government with Indonesia is laid down in the Multi-Annual Strategic Plan 2008-2011 (MASP). The overall objective is to strengthen bilateral relations and to support Indonesia in realizing its medium term development goals. The MASP MBA scholarship program aims to achieve the the following four strategic goals:

1. Improved democracy, stability, human rights and governance, resulting in a just and safe society;

2. Improved economic governance, resulting in sustainable economic growth and an equal distribution of growth through society, in order to decrease poverty more rapidly;

3. Improved environmental and climate policy and implementation, resulting in increased use of renewable energy, sustainable management of natural resources, reducing emissions of greenhouse gas and adaptation to climate change;

4. Intensified bilateral relations through a 'comprehensive partnership framework'.

The StuNed MBA scholarship programme focuses on generating and strengthening institutional capacity in support of the above mentioned strategic goals. * have an academic or professional background that is related to the subject of the course;

* TOEFL Computer based 213, or ITP 550, IELTS 6)
* be admitted to one of the courses or programmes offered by Institutes of Higher Education in the Netherlands for the academic year 2010;
* no age limit, but priority will be given to mid-career professionals.

* have an academic or professional background that is related to the subject of the course;

* have a high level of English proficiency, TOEFL 520
* be admitted to one of the courses or programmes offered by Institutes of Higher Education in the Netherlands for the academic year 2010
* no age limit, but priority will be given to the mid-career professional

All short courses with a duration of more than 6 weeks and less then 6 months with a clear relation to the objectives of the StuNed programme.

StuNed for Tailor-Made Training Programmes

Institutions, consortia and functional networks (hereafter called institutions/networks) may submit a collective application for staff upgrading. Training needs can consist of existing master courses (including the Dutch part of a double degree programmes) and short courses or tailor made programmes.

Priority will be given to the Indonesian partner organisations of the Dutch Embassy. Institutions and other organization related to the development sectors which are mentioned in the MASP are also eligible.

Tailor made programmes are defined as short courses of which the starting date, location and/or time frame is adjusted to the institutions requirements. The programme may take place entirely or partly in Indonesia or the Netherlands.

Refresher Courses

Canadian Ecology Scholarships and Grants

PhD Scholarship and grants in aquatic ecology: Measuring greenhouse gas emissions by aquatic systems colonized by noxious cyanobacterial blooms and role of the physico-chemical conditions on gaseous exchanges

Scholarship and Grant Description : There is a growing concern to know the role of small reservoirs generated by farming and waste water treatment ponds in populated regions of the world, given their recent expansion. These systems are often dominated by cyanobacteria, causing a sanitary risk due to the generated toxins. Moreover, the factors governing the production of cyanotoxins are not well understood, complicating the management of water downstream. Even if cyanobacteria contributes to the production of oxygen in the atmosphere, the biomass produced in these meso- to eutrophic ecosystems accumulates at the lake bottom, where microbial decomposition releases part of the carbon in the form of greenhouse gases (GHG; in the form of methane under anoxic conditions). Besides, a narrow link seems to exist between climate change and proliferation of cyanobacteria, already stimulated by the excessive enrichment in nutrients caused by urban, agricultural and industrial developments. Therefore, the physico-chemical changes linked to climate (e.g., increase in temperature, thermal stability and anoxia) should exacerbate the problems caused by cyanobacterial blooms. The nitrogen cycle being connected to cyanobacteria and their production of toxins, the emissions of nitrous oxide by meso- to eutrophic aquatic systems could also represent a significant contribution to global GHG emissions. The project will occur in Southern Quebec and possibly in the region of Perth in Australia (collaboration with UWA planned in 2011). It might also be linked to a scholarship and grant project on the production of cyanotoxins.

Techonology Australian Scholarship

An exciting opportunity exists for a suitably qualified graduate to undertake a PhD scholarship to investigate the role of saccharides in transformations of iron chemistry in seawater.

Based at The University of Technology, Sydney within the Plant Functional Biology and Climate Change Cluster (C3) the project will be undertaken as part of a larger multidisciplinary project entitled “Novel technologies to resolve the role of organic matter on iron chemistry and bioavailability in the South Pacific Ocean” recently funded by the Australian Research Council under the Discovery Project scheme.

This scholarship offers a unique opportunity to work within a cross-disciplinary scientific collaboration at national and international levels studying iron biogeochemistry.

The PhD candidate will investigate the role of organic matter, especially biologically produced organics on the chemical speciation and redox cycling of iron in marine systems.

This PhD research will be done in parallel with a project on the measurement of iron bioavailability and the optimisation of a cyanobacterial bioreporter (C. Hassler), thus providing a unique opportunity to understand the complex interplay between iron chemistry and biology.

Participation in one or more oceanographic voyages in the Southern Ocean or the Tasman Sea is anticipated.

POULTRY WELFARE DOCTORAL RESEARCH SCHOLARSHIP

This research scholarship provides $18,000 per year for three years for an exceptional graduate student pursing a PhD at the University of Guelph in the area of poultry welfare. Applicants must hold or expect to hold (at the time of the start of award) a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in science, preferably in animal welfare and/or poultry science and must be admissible to the Graduate School of the University of Guelph and either Ontario Veterinary College or Ontario Agricultural College. Selection will be based on academic achievement and quality of their graduate research proposal in field of poultry welfare. Multidisciplinary projects are highly recommended. Applicants will be eligible to receive other scholarships and bursaries in conjunction with this program.

Applicants for the Poultry Welfare Doctoral Scholarship are evaluated by the Campbell Centre for the Study of Animal Welfare (CCSAW) Steering Committee. Scholarship support is for three years full-time equivalent at the graduate level and is subject to yearly performance review by the CCSAW Steering Committee. Students awarded the Poultry Welfare Doctoral Research Scholarship will be expected to participate in poultry industry and scholarly public events and attribute their support in all communications regarding their research. Funding of second and third year of the PhD program depends on successful progress as determined by the CCSAW Steering Committee. Applicants should arrange to have a complete application for doctoral program of study on file at Graduate Program Services and must submit a completed scholarship application to CCSAW, including application form, curriculum vitae, curriculum vitae of proposed supervisor(s), official university transcripts and 3 signed and sealed letters of reference by March 1, 2010. EDC International Business Scholarships and Grants

EDC is awarding 30 scholarships every year. Twenty-five of these scholarships will recognize exceptional students in the field of international business or economics. The remaining five scholarships will be awarded to outstanding business students with a focus on environment related studies.

An EDC scholarship is worth a $3,000 cash award and, pending eligibility, a potential four-month work term with mentoring from leading industry experts at EDC’s head office in Ottawa, valued at approximately $10,000.

To qualify for one of EDC’s scholarships, you must be:
•a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada
•currently enrolled in full-time studies at a Canadian university
•in 2nd, 3rd, or 4th year of your first undergraduate degree
•studying international business, economics, or combining international business with sustainable management or environmental studies
•returning to full-time undergraduate studies in one of these fields for the next academic year

Sampoerna Foundation Overseas MBA Scholarship – 2010 Intake

The Sampoerna Foundation Overseas MBA Scholarship is a means to groom Indonesia's future business leaders. Sampoerna Foundation provides one (1) scholarship to pursue a Master's of Business Administration degree at leading university overseas. Upon completing the program, the scholarship recipient is required to return to Indonesia and endeavor to transfer his/ her knowledge to his/ her fellow citizens.

Basic Requirements:
. Indonesian citizen who is under 35 years of age when lodging the application;
· Hold a local Bachelor's degree from any discipline with a minimum GPA of 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale);
· Have a minimum of 2 year full-time professional work experience after the completion of the undergraduate degree;
· Currently did not enroll in graduate or post-graduate program, or obtained a Master's degree or equivalent;
· Did not graduate from an overseas tertiary institutions, unless was on a full scholarship;
· Do not receive other equivalent award or scholarship offering similar or other benefits at the time of the award;
· Has applied to the university(ies) that are recommended by Sampoerna Foundation for the academic year 2010/2011 by the closing date of this scholarship application (February 1, 2010);
· Submit the result of TOEFL/ IELTS and GMAT with the minimum score as required by the chosen university;
· Have motivation to return to Indonesia and work in Indonesia upon completion of the MBA program.

What is Covered?
The scholarship covers the following:

· GMAT and TOEFL/ IELTS reimbursement, one time only, based on original invoice;

· University application fee, for up to two (2) universities;

· Student visa application fee;

· Return airfares from Jakarta to the place of study;

· Tuition fees, for the duration of study;

· Living allowance, to support living costs during period of study;

· Literature allowance, to purchase textbooks required for study.

To award full scholarships to non-final year undergraduate students for studying approved courses/programs at specified overseas universities in 2010/2011 academic year (Lists of the approved disciplines and overseas universities in Attachment A). To enable students to have more exposure in their fields of study, applicants will have the flexibility to major in a different discipline, other than the one the applicant is currently studying, while aboard. The majoring discipline, however, will have to be listed in the approved disciplines list by HSBC as below:

All disciplines under architecture, business and economics, communication, computer science/information systems, construction and land use, dentistry, design, education, engineering, health care, hotel and tourism, law, medicine, science (basic and applied), social sciences, textiles, and arts subjects (linguistics and languages, translation, history, geography, fine arts and applied arts) and environment.

Value of this Scholarship award :
Full scholarship shall be awarded
(Maximum total value of scholarships for all awardees is HK$869,118)

Coverage of this scholarship award :
– Full Tuition fees
- A minimum economy return airfare

Full-time MBA Scholarships, European School of Management and Technology

ESMT is offering several additional merit-based scholarships for applicants to the Full-time MBA program beginning January 2010 in Berlin. These scholarships have been made possible by ESMT’s partner companies, who have donated to the scholarship pool. Outstanding female candidates may also apply for a limited number of full-tuition scholarships. Davis Scholarships – Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies

4 four-year Ph.D. full scholarships available in the fall of 2010.

Mrs. Kathryn Davis, an HEI alumna who obtained her PhD in 1934, is founding four Ph.D. full scholarships for a four-year period.

Two of these grants (Kathryn Davis Grant and Shelby Cullom Davis Grant) are intended for students of any nationality

having completed a degree programme in an American university.

Two other grants (Davis Grants) are intended for

two students coming from a Muslim country .

These grants will be attributed in the Spring of 2010 to students starting their PhD programme in September 2010 at the Institute exclusively. They will exempt them from tuition fees and provide a living allowance of 15000 CHF per year. They will last for a period of four years and will be renewed each year depending on the thesis progress.
